The 2017 Roland Minkowitsch Gruner Veltliner is a wonderful expression of Austria’s most important grape variety. Boasting a great mix of concentration and freshness, this is the white wine you want to be drinking as spring turns to summer.
And you can feel good about drinking it too. It comes from a 15th generation family farm on the border of Slovakia that uses organics and biodynamics in the vineyeards and minimal interventionist techniques in the cellar. And most importantly, it’s delicious!

“Drinks like a top-flight Wachau Gruner with great concentration of fruit, zingy acidity, and that classic white pepper nuance.” – JS

If you love clean and zesty white wines like Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc and Chablis, do yourself a favor and try this one. Yes, it comes in tall and slender bottle like many Germanic wines, but this one is DEFINITELY DRY. We opened a bottle last week as a staff for “educational purposes” of course. And the consensus was that this should cost $25+. The nose will immediately grab you — notes of lime, citrus zest, green apple, green herbs, and white pepper are all there. And the palate is equally exciting with fresh and zesty notes of herb accented citrus, pear skin, herbal oil and white pepper.
Martin Minkowitsch and his family are no strangers to the Weinviertel appellation, about 30 miles south of Vienna. This is Austria’s largest growing zone and Martin’s family relocated here from Croatia in 1620. Despite the large amount of acreage under vine, this is by no means a large producer. In fact, they only produce about 750 cases of this wine in a good year. They work with old vines, their yields are low, they still crush their grapes in a large wooden press from 1820, and they age in large, older foudres.
Artisanal Wines at Affordable Prices has been the Table Wine tagline since we opened in 2010. And that philosophy is alive and well with this one. I’m dreaming of a bottle of enjoying a bottle of his with flaky white fish or shrimp in an herb and butter sauce with lots of spring and summer fresh veggies. Yum!
